The Steelers' offensive coordinator arrived in Pittsburgh with a reputation for a certain... let's call it devotion... to the ground game, and he has not disappointed. He is a man who looks at a third-and-eight situation and sees, somewhere deep in his soul, an opportunity for a perfectly executed fullback dive. Arthur Smith does not chase trends. Arthur Smith chases linebackers with a tight end and asks them politely to move.

Who Is Arthur Smith, and Why Does He Love Tight Ends So Much?

Before Pittsburgh, Smith was the head coach of the Atlanta Falcons, where he presided over three seasons of "well, somebody has to run the football." He was fired, as coaches tend to be, and promptly resurfaced in Pittsburgh, where the Steelers handed him the keys to an offence and a promise that nobody would ask him to throw the ball forty times a game. Honestly, he seems happier. He's got a beard, he's got a headset, and he's got roughly eleven tight ends on the roster at any given moment. Name a player. Is he a tight end? Doesn't matter. What makes Smith genuinely likeable is that he doesn't pretend otherwise. He is essentially a bloke who has decided that the forward pass is a fad and he's simply waiting for everyone else to catch up. What Is It Actually Like Watching an Arthur Smith Offence?

It is, first and foremost, an exercise in trust. You trust that on second-and-ten, he will hand the ball off. You trust that on third-and-two, he will hand the ball off. And you trust that on fourth-and-one from your own thirty-five, he will absolutely, without hesitation, hand the ball off, because Arthur Smith believes in his offensive line the way other people believe in the healing power of a good cup of tea. When it works, it is beautiful — a long, grinding, soul-crushing drive that ends in a touchdown and leaves the opposing defence gasping for air and questioning their career choices. When it doesn't work, you get a three-and-out, a punt, and approximately nine thousand angry posts on social media before the commercial break has even finished.

The thing is, he's not wrong about everything. Ball control wins games. Keeping your defence off the field wins games. And occasionally, just occasionally, Smith will pull out a genuinely creative design — a tackle-eligible throwback, a tight end screen on third down, a bootleg that makes a linebacker look like he's just realised he left the oven on — and you remember why the Steelers hired him in the first place. He is stubborn, he is bearded, and he is going to run the football. Accept it, embrace it, and maybe invest in a stress ball. In Pittsburgh, they wouldn't have it any other way.
