Arthur Smith Titans

I still remember the moment it clicked for me. It was a cold Sunday, I had a mug of tea going cold beside me, and the Tennessee Titans were doing what they did best under Arthur Smith — handing the ball to Derrick Henry and daring anyone to stop it. I had never been a Titans fan in any serious sense, but something about that offence pulled me in. It was stubborn, unfashionable and gloriously effective, and it made me care about a team I had no real reason to care about.

Smith arrived in Nashville in 2019 as offensive coordinator, taking over an offence that had been drifting. What he built over the next two seasons was less a scheme than a philosophy. He believed in the run, in tight ends who could block and catch, and in play-action passing that punished defences for creeping forward. When Ryan Tannehill replaced Marcus Mariota that season, the whole thing snapped into place, and the Titans rode it all the way to the AFC Championship game.

Why Arthur Smith's Titans Offence Felt Like a Throwback

What I loved most was how unapologetic it all was. Everyone in the stadium knew Henry was getting the ball on third and short, and it still worked. Smith leaned on heavy personnel, moved bodies around before the snap, and trusted his linemen to win their match-ups. There was no gimmickry, no desperate attempt to be the cleverest person in the room. It was old-school football dressed up in modern coaching detail, and as a neutral watching from my sofa, it was a genuine pleasure. I found myself rewinding plays just to watch the blocking unfold.

The Legacy Smith Left Behind in Tennessee

When Smith left to take the head coaching job in Atlanta, I felt a strange sense of loss on behalf of a fanbase I did not belong to. His time with the Titans was short, but it left marks that were easy to see. Henry's 2,000-yard season in 2020 was the headline, yet the deeper legacy was a template — a reminder that a team can win by committing fully to an identity rather than chasing whatever is trendy. I have watched plenty of coordinators come and go since, and few have had that clarity of purpose. Whether or not you admire the style, you have to respect the conviction behind it.

Looking back, my affection for that Titans offence was never really about loyalty. It was about watching a group of people do one thing extraordinarily well, week after week, whilst everyone else tried to be clever. That is rarer than it should be, and I suspect I will still be thinking about it long after the current crop of trends has faded away.
