Some buildings are just buildings. A few feel more like a conversation you have been waiting years to finish. I have been wandering past the fencing around Jackson Park on Chicago's South Side since the first diggers turned up, and I will happily admit I had no idea what to expect. What is rising there now — the Barack Obama Presidential Center — is far more than a museum. It is a library, a public forum, a recording studio, a garden, a sledding hill and, if the Obamas get their way, a proper neighbourhood anchor rather than a gated monument to one man.

Quiet Strength: Why the South Side Was Always the Point

There is something rather fitting about the idea of courage being drawn in a single, unbroken outline. The Obamas could have placed this centre anywhere in the world, and plenty of cities would have welcomed it with open arms. Instead they chose the South Side, a few streets from where Michelle Obama grew up and not far from the Altgeld Gardens housing estate where a young community organiser named Barack Obama knocked on doors and learned to listen. That decision says more about the project than any plaque ever could. The campus, designed by Tod Williams Billie Tsien Architects with the landscape work led by Michael Van Valkenburgh Associates, will include a branch of the Chicago Public Library, a public plaza, a fruit and vegetable garden and a 225-foot tower that will be visible from miles around. What I love most is that entry to many of the public spaces is intended to be free — an invitation rather than a toll gate.

The Power of a Single Line: Portraits, Identity and Storytelling

I keep thinking about how much a simple outline can hold. A face in profile, drawn without a single shading mark, still tells you everything about a person's bearing. That is roughly what I hope the museum galleries will manage to do. The collection will cover the 2008 campaign, the presidency itself and, crucially, the ordinary people who made it possible — the Pullman porters, the church congregations, the volunteers who knocked on doors in the rain. I have spoken to neighbours who are cautiously excited and to others who worry about rising rents and disappearing car parks. Both reactions feel honest. A landmark of this scale changes a community, and pretending otherwise would be dishonest. The opening is expected around 2026, and I plan to be there on day one, probably queuing far too early with a flask of tea in hand, waiting to see whether a building can genuinely keep a promise.
