Darnell Mooney 40 Time

Let's talk about Darnell Mooney's 40-yard dash, shall we? The man is not enormous. He is not built like a fridge with legs. He is, by NFL standards, a fairly modest 5ft 10in and change, which means scouts look at him and immediately start muttering about "slot receivers" and "scheme fits" whilst completely missing the bit where he runs past everybody. At the 2020 NFL Combine, Mooney clocked a 4.38-second 40-yard dash, and somewhere a defensive back felt a cold shiver run down his spine for absolutely no reason he could explain. That number isn't just quick. That number is the sort of quick that makes a coach spill his coffee, apologise to the coffee, and then spill it again. For a fifth-round pick out of Tulane, it was the kind of résumé line that turns a "maybe" into a "get him on the plane".

Why 4.38 Seconds Is Basically Teleportation in Cleats

Here's the thing about a 4.38: it doesn't sound that much faster than a 4.5 until you remember that 0.12 seconds is roughly the amount of time it takes you to decide whether to say "hello" to a colleague in the corridor and then awkwardly commit to it anyway. In that same window, Mooney has already left the line, eaten up ten yards, and started thinking about what he fancies for dinner. Cornerbacks who ran a 4.5 at their own pro day suddenly develop a deep and sincere interest in zone coverage. The Bears drafted him in the fifth round, which in hindsight looks like finding a tenner in an old coat pocket and discovering it's actually a winning scratchcard. He didn't just test fast; he played fast, and there is a substantial difference between the two.

What a 4.38 Actually Buys You on a Sunday

Speed like that buys a receiver a few very specific luxuries. It buys him a free release off the line, because nobody wants to press a fella who might simply leave the postcode entirely. It buys him respect on deep routes, which in turn buys him the underneath stuff, because safeties start cheating backwards and suddenly there's a nice soft patch of turf at twelve yards with his name on it. It also buys him the terrifying job of being the bloke who has to run the clear-out route, sprinting 40 yards at full tilt purely so somebody else can catch a pass, which is a bit like being asked to sprint to the shop so your mate can eat your chips. Still, Mooney made a career out of turning that raw straight-line speed into real production, and by 2021 he'd racked up over 1,000 receiving yards for a Bears offence that was, to put it politely, going through a phase. So next time you hear someone sneer at a 40 time, remember: 4.38 seconds is the difference between a fifth-round flier and a genuine problem for every defensive coordinator in the league.
