Isaiah is one of the most quoted prophets in the Hebrew Bible, yet readers often pass over a simple question: how old was he when his ministry began, and how old was he when it ended? The text itself never states his age directly, so any answer has to be pieced together from dates, family details and the length of his career. What emerges is a surprisingly consistent picture of a man who began young and served for decades.

When Did Isaiah's Ministry Begin?

The key anchor is Isaiah 6:1, which places his prophetic call "in the year that King Uzziah died" — commonly dated to around 740–739 BCE. If Isaiah was a young adult at that moment, he would have been born somewhere near 765 BCE. Most scholars who attempt a reconstruction suggest he was somewhere between twenty and thirty when he received his commission, which fits the pattern of other prophets who were called early in life. A man in his twenties would have had the energy and the decades ahead of him needed for a ministry that stretched across the reigns of Jotham, Ahaz and Hezekiah.

What His Family Life Suggests About His Age

Isaiah was married — his wife is described as a prophetess — and he had at least two sons with deliberately symbolic names. The elder, Shear-Jashub, appears alongside his father in Isaiah 7:3, during the crisis of around 734 BCE, and is old enough to be brought along as a living sign to King Ahaz. A child capable of walking and being presented publicly implies that Isaiah was already a husband and father by that point, which in turn suggests he was at least in his early twenties when his ministry started. His younger son, Maher-Shalal-Hash-Baz, was born shortly afterwards, confirming that Isaiah's household was established during the early years of his preaching.

How Long Did Isaiah's Work Continue?

Isaiah's recorded activity runs from roughly 740 BCE into the reign of Hezekiah, whose rule is usually dated to about 715–686 BCE. That alone gives him a public career of forty years or more. Later tradition, reflected in the New Testament reference to a prophet being sawn in two, holds that he was executed under King Manasseh, whose reign began in the late eighth century BCE. If that tradition is accepted, Isaiah's death may have occurred in the 690s BCE.

A Reasonable Estimate of Isaiah's Age

Bringing these strands together, the most likely reconstruction is that Isaiah was called in his mid-twenties, ministered for more than four decades, and died at somewhere between seventy and eighty years of age. That range accounts for the long span of his oracles, the maturity of his early family life and the tradition of a violent end late in life. While certainty is impossible, the evidence points to a prophet who was young when he began and elderly when he finished — a lifetime devoted to the same message he first received in the temple.
