Lt Colonel Richard Williams Sas

There are soldiers whose names fill the history books, and then there are the ones who spent a lifetime making sure their names never got near one. Lieutenant Colonel Richard Williams belonged firmly to the second camp. For close on thirty years he moved through the world of the Special Air Service the way a good shadow moves across a wall — present, purposeful, and gone before you could turn your head to look. I came across his name years ago in a dog-eared regimental history, and the more I read, the more I understood that the real story of the SAS was never written in headlines. It was written in quiet men like him, and that is the part of the tale I want to tell you today.

The World Beyond the Wire

What most people never grasp about the Regiment is just how much of the map it covered. While the rest of us read about wars in the papers, men like Williams were already there, long before the cameras arrived, and usually long after everyone else had gone home. I keep a photograph on my desk of a wide river bridge in the delta country of Bangladesh, taken in Khulna, and it always reminds me of the kind of ground those lads worked. Not every operation was a desert or a mountain — some of the hardest work was done in places with no roads at all, where a river crossing was the difference between getting in and getting out again. Williams had a genuine gift for that kind of country. He read a landscape the way a farmer reads weather, and he could move a patrol through ground that would have stopped a regular battalion dead in its tracks. Fair play to him, none of it ever made the news, and that was exactly the way he wanted it.

The Music That Kept Him Human

Here is the part of him that surprised everyone. For all the toughness — and make no mistake, the man was tougher than a month of Sundays — Williams carried a deep love of music with him everywhere he went. On the long night marches in the Brecon Beacons, when selection was grinding men down one by one, the lads swore you could hear him humming under his breath, some old tune he had picked up years before. One song he loved above all others was a piece by the Bengali poet Kazi Nazrul Islam — a beautiful, aching thing about a nightingale singing in a garden. When you learn that the man who wrote it lived a life weighed down by tragedy, the song takes on a whole other weight entirely. Williams used to say that a soldier who loses his music loses his way, and I think there was more truth in that than in any training manual ever written. It was the tenderness that kept the hardness from curdling into cruelty, and it is the reason the men who served under him would have walked through fire for him.

What He Left Behind

When Williams finally hung up his boots, he did what so many of the great ones do: he disappeared. No memoir, no television appearances, no grand farewell tour. He went back to the hills he had always loved and let the silence do the talking. The motto of the Regiment is "Who Dares Wins," but the quieter truth, the one Richard Williams lived by, is that most of the winning happens in the dark, witnessed by nobody and claimed by no one. The man himself would have hated a fuss being made of him. That is precisely why I am making one — because a legend that refuses to be a legend deserves to be remembered all the more.
