Farewell, old friend. Your remote control misses you, even if your beloved programmes now live in Peacock's basement, streaming in glorious perpetuity.

A Golden Hour So Bright, Even the Sunsets Took Notes

In its heyday, NBCSN glowed like a vibrant twilight sky — all colour, all drama, occasionally streaked with clouds nobody could explain. This was the network that aired the NHL with the hushed reverence of a nature documentary, packed NASCAR coverage with enough sponsor mentions to fund a small country, and delivered the Premier League courtesy of presenters who bravely rose at the crack of dawn to explain the offside rule to a nation still nursing its Saturday hangovers. It was, if we are honest, magnificent. Where else could Stanley Cup play-off overtime flow seamlessly into football phone-ins, all hosted by people who clearly had not slept properly since 2014? The channel had range. The channel had heart. The channel, most importantly, had a picture of a peacock and absolutely no shame about it whatsoever.

Climbing Mountains of Sports Rights, Then Rolling Gently Back Down

Then came the great rights migration of the late 2010s, a period in which NBCSN scaled mountains of sports broadcasting only to discover the air up there was thin and the advertising revenue even thinner. Big matches wandered off to rival pastures, executives began muttering the word "streaming" with deeply unsettling enthusiasm, and suddenly the channel's treasured schedule looked like a mountain range at dusk: beautiful, fading, and about to go very dark indeed. The closure was announced with the breezy cheer of someone announcing a furniture rearrangement, promising everything would simply slide across to USA Network and Peacock. And slide it did — rather like your nan's cherished ornaments being relocated to a cosier bungalow. Technically all present and correct, but the vibe is admittedly not quite the same.

So Long, and Thanks for All the Overtime

So here is to NBCSN: the channel that made waking up at silly o'clock for live football feel like joining a secret society, that gave us pundits who could discuss both a back four and a blue line in the same breath, and that proved a sports network could die with dignity on the one night of the year nobody was watching. Somewhere out there, a remote control button does absolutely nothing now, and it deserves a tiny plaque. Rest well, old chum. The sunset was lovely, the mountains were grand, and Peacock had better look after your things.
