The 2016 Ohio State roster was supposed to be a coronation. Urban Meyer had stockpiled blue-chip recruits like a doomsday prepper hoarding canned goods. J.T. Barrett returned at quarterback. Malik Hooker, Marshon Lattimore and Gareon Conley lurked in the secondary. Pat Elflein and Billy Price anchored an offensive line that looked carved from granite. On paper, it was a juggernaut. On grass, it was a reminder that talent without cohesion is just an expensive way to lose. The Buckeyes went 11-2, beat Michigan in a double-overtime thriller, and then walked into the Fiesta Bowl and were shut out 31-0 by Clemson. No points. No pulse. No mercy. The roster was a mausoleum of future NFL stars, all dressed up for a funeral they did not see coming.

The defensive side of the 2016 Ohio State roster was genuinely frightening. Hooker roamed the back end like a grim reaper with ball skills. Lattimore and Conley erased receivers from existence. Raekwon McMillan filled running lanes with bad intentions. Tyquan Lewis, Sam Hubbard and a freshman named Nick Bosa made quarterbacks hear footsteps in their sleep. They held opponents to 15.5 points per game, a figure that flattered almost everyone. But a defence can only carry a corpse for so long. When the offence stalled, the defence suffocated. When the offence turned the ball over, the defence bled. By the time Clemson arrived, the unit was exhausted from covering for a scheme that had no answers. A fortress is useless if the people inside keep setting fires.
