Played For Rockies And Cardinals

There are certain players who just leave a mark on you, and for my money, Nolan Arenado is one of them. I've spent many a long evening watching baseball, and the way he went about his business with the Colorado Rockies and then the St. Louis Cardinals is the kind of thing that makes you love the game all over again. He's the fella who plays the hot corner like it's his own back garden, and you don't see that level of commitment every day. It got me thinking about what it actually means to carry a club on your shoulders, and how rare it is to do it twice, in two completely different corners of the game.

The Rockies Years: Building a Legend in the High Country

Arenado came up through the Rockies system and it didn't take him long to make himself known. From his debut in 2013, he was turning heads with the glove, and fair play to him, the bat soon caught up. Eight Gold Gloves, multiple Silver Sluggers, and year after year he was the man you'd want at third base with the game on the line. Coors Field suited him, sure, but he was far more than a product of the altitude. The man grafted for every bit of it, and you could see it in the bare-handed pickups, the laser throws across the diamond, and the way he crushed balls into the thin Denver night sky. It reminded me of watching any great performer — the ones who make the hard stuff look easy are always the ones who've put the hours in when nobody's watching.

The Rockies gave him a platform and he gave them everything back in return. There were MVP-calibre seasons, playoff runs, and moments that had the Denver crowd on its feet, roaring in the cold mountain air. But as is often the way in baseball, the relationship ran its course, and in early 2021 the news broke that he was heading to St. Louis. It was a bitter pill for Rockies fans, and I know plenty of them who still shake their heads about it to this day. He was theirs, and now he wasn't.

A New Chapter in St. Louis: The Cardinal Way

And then there were the Cardinals. From the minute he pulled on the red, Arenado looked at home. St. Louis is a town that knows its baseball — they don't suffer fools, and they don't hand out loyalty lightly. But Arenado earned it, and then some. He anchored that infield, became a genuine leader in the clubhouse, and carried the offence through plenty of tight stretches. The 2022 season, when he finished near the top of the MVP voting, was the kind of campaign that reminds you just how good he really is. There was a calm authority about him out there, the mark of a man who knows his own game inside out.

What I've always admired is the consistency. Some players have a good year and then drift; Arenado just keeps showing up, day in and day out, putting in the shifts. There's a reliability to him that's rare in modern sport, and it's no wonder the Cardinals built so much around him. Watching him patrol third base in St. Louis, it felt like the natural continuation of a career built on hard graft and stubborn excellence. He's not the flashiest talker and he never went looking for headlines, but the work spoke for itself, night after night.

He wasn't the first to make that particular journey, mind you — Matt Holliday and Dexter Fowler both wore Rockies purple before pulling on Cardinals red, so there's a bit of a tradition to it. But nobody did it quite like Arenado. Two ballparks, two sets of fans, one standard of brilliance. For my money, that's the definition of a proper ballplayer, and I'd wager there are plenty of folk in both Denver and St. Louis who'd raise a glass to that.
